1. Check the Lubrication
A. Remove the valve mechanism covers. Refer to the engine Disassembly and Assembly manual.
B. Check the lubrication in the valve compartment. Ensure that there is adequate engine oil flow in the valve compartment. The passages for the engine oil must be clean.

Result: The lubrication is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The lubrication is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace any damaged or worn components.
2. Check the Valve Lash
A. Adjust the engine valve lash. Refer to the engine Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting manual.
Valve Lash
Result: The valve lash is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The valve lash is NOT OK.
Repair: Adjust the valve lash.
3. Check the Valve Train Components for Wear
A. Inspect the following components of the valve train:
• Rocker arms
• Pushrods
• Valve lifters
• Camshaft
• Valve stems
• Rocker shafts
B. Check the components for the following conditions: abnormal wear, excessive wear, straightness, and cleanliness.
Valve Train Components
Result: The valve train components are OK.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The valve train components are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace any damaged or worn components.
