Engine speed must be at least 1700 rpm to circulate sufficient brake cooling oil through the oil coolers to keep the disc brakes cool.Brake Oil Temperature
Observe the brake oil temperature gauge frequently.If the indicator leaves the crosshatch zone, the oil cooler capacity has been exceeded. Gradually stop the machine. Run the engine at moderate speed with the retarder control on until the oil cools. Then proceed at a slower speed in a lower gear.When the retarder lever is applied, a third oil cooler is available for cooling.Downgrade Retarding
Attempting to stay in a lower gear on a long downgrade by retarding can be unsuccessful. Engine speed may reach the upshift point. The resulting lower engine speed reduces brake cooling oil flow and may cause brake overheating.The transmission upshift point is raised to a higher rpm than normal shift point whenever service brake or retarder are applied.When approaching a long, steep downgrade, reduce the travel speed, downshift and use the retarder.
Never coast downgrade in NEUTRAL. Always keep transmission in gear.
The actual grade capability for each gear will vary some, depending on outside temperatures, rolling resistance, load, the condition of the cooling system and tire size.The above table is based on 32°C (90°F) outside temperature. To prevent undesired upshifting, move the selector to the gear position you are retarding in.If the machine gains too much speed while retarding, threatening engine overspeed, use the service brake until speed is reduced. If additional braking is needed, hold down secondary brake lever. This adds more brake force.Travel at the best average speed. Do not speed up and brake down. Don't try to do all the braking at the bottom of a hill. Keep braking steady and speed under control. Should the engine still be in danger of overspeeding, move the selector one gear higher to reduce engine speed until the machine slows. Then return the selector to original position.Secondary Braking (Emergency Stops)
The machine has a separate secondary braking air supply. The machine can be stopped with the secondary braking system, should a service/retarder air system failure occur. Pull the red lever on the left all the way down for spring application of all four wheel brakes, if brake air pressure is lost and alarm sounds, or if in danger of engine overspeed.Whenever an emergency stop is made due to any circumstance, recheck oil, fuel, air pressure, leaks, etc. and correct faults before attempting to move the machine. If all air in secondary system is lost, the brakes will apply automatically, and remain applied. Do not release brakes with brake release switch unless wheels are blocked.
Use the parking brake only for parking.
Use care when backing into the dump area. Stay clear of soft edges that could collapse under the machine. Lower the body (bed) COMPLETELY before pulling out on the return trip.Keep the hoist lever in float while loading and traveling.
