1. The machine must be level and the parking brake engaged.2. Before starting the engine, the oil level must be at the SAFE STARTING RANGE on the ENGINE STOPPED side of the dipstick (1).3. With the engine running and the oil warm, maintain the oil level between the LOW IDLE marks on the ENGINE RUNNING side of the dipstick.4. Check Oil Levels
Check the transmission sight gauge (1), hoist converter and brake hydraulic tank sight gauge (2) oil levels.Check with the body (bed) lowered, engine stopped and the oil cold.The oil must be to the FULL COLD mark in sight gauges (1) and (2). Remove oil fill caps to add oil if necessary. If the system has been drained, it will be necessary to stop the engine and add oil several times.Steering Hydraulic Tank
Check oil level
Check the steering system hydraulic oil level. Maintain the oil (with the machine and engine stopped) level to the FULL mark in the upper sight gauge.Walk-Around Inspection
Inspect Machine
For maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection when performing lubrication and maintenance work. Inspect under and around the machine for such items as loose or missing bolts, trash buildup, oil, fuel or coolant leaks. 1. Inspect body for damage, wear or distortion. Check the welds and mounting brackets for the fuel tank, the hydraulic tank, etc. Have necessary repairs made.2. Inspect tires for cuts, gouges and proper inflation. Have tires repaired if necessary. Replace missing valve caps. 3. Inspect lights for broken lamps, lenses and proper operation. Replace broken lamps and lenses. 4. Inspect transmission, hoist, converter and brake hydraulic system for leaks, worn hoses and damaged lines. Repair leaks, replace worn hoses and damaged lines. 5. Check frame for cracks. The areas shown in the illustration are the most important and should be checked daily. Have repairs made if necessary. 6. Inspect suspension cylinders for leaks. Repair leaks. Recharge cylinders. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for instructions or service.7. Inspect engine compartment for oil and fuel leaks. Repair leaks.8. Inspect steering hydraulic system for leaks, worn hoses and damaged lines. Repair leaks, replace worn hoses and damaged lines.9. Inspect covers for damage, loose or missing bolts. Tighten loose bolts and replace missing bolts. 10. Inspect the Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) for cracks in welds, castings or any metal section on the ROPS. Check mounting bolts and mounting pads for damage. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for necessary repairs. 11. Inspect cooling system for leaks, worn hoses and trash buildup. Repair leaks, replace damaged hoses and remove trash build-up.Radiator and Aftercooler
Check Coolant Level
The radiator cap is located on the right side platform. Access to the cap can be made through the hole in the hood.If it is necessary to add make-up coolant daily, inspect for leaks.1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure. Maintain the coolant level above the level indicator plate in the bottom of the fill pipe.2. Clean
