Set the mat thickness. Place a wood block at each side of the screed. Place the wood blocks directly under the thickness control of the screed. The blocks should be approximately 1200 mm (4 ft) long for a hydraulically extendable screed.The blocks should be 25% thicker than the desired thickness of the compacted mat. The blocks should extend from the front of the screed to the rear of the screed extensions, when you use screed extensions.
If a hydraulically extendable screed is being used, blocks should also be used under each end of the extensions. The blocks should be 600 mm (2 ft) long. Lower the screed onto the blocks. Place the operating mode switch on the paver into the AUTOMATIC position. Remove any slack in the control for the tow arm by slowly moving the paver forward.
Turn the cranks for the screed end plate in order to match the shoes for the end plate to the grade.
When the paver moves forward, the screed will leave a mat that starts at a thickness of the block. The mat will gradually increase to full thickness as the screed moves off the blocks.
