Check Oil Level
At operating temperature, the differential/final drive oil is hot. Refer to the "Safety Section" for information about hot oil and fluid penetration.Early machines
1. Clean and remove the level inspection cap from the elbow on the right hand final drive slowly to relieve pressure.2. Oil should be to the top of the elbow. Add oil if necessary through the oil fill tube on the right hand rear of the machine.3. Install the cap.Later Machines
1. Park machine on level ground. Check oil level at both sight gauges at the rear of the final drive housing. Oil level should be above the center of the sight gauge. 2. To add oil if necessary, remove the breather cap from the filler tube on the right hand rear of the machine. Add oil until oil level registers above the center of the sight gauge.3. Clean and install the cap.Service Brake Pads
Inspect Pads
Inspect the brake pads for excessive wear. Replace the pads, if worn or damaged. Also check the condition of the rotor surface. If the surface is severely scored, replace the rotor. Also inspect the brake casting for wear or damage. Replace the casting, if it is severely worn or damaged. Measure the dimension from the rotor to the back of the pad mounting plate. The minimum permissible thickness in the area of most wear is 11.0 mm (.44 in).Brake pad replacement requires removal of the belt and the wheel.See the Service Manual or contact your Caterpillar dealer for this procedure.Brake Caliper Scraper
Inspect Scraper
If freezing conditions have been experienced since last machine use, clean out inner drive wheels to prevent excessive force on the brake caliper protection scrapers when starting the machine. Inspect the condition of the scraper. Adjust scraper, if necessary. Check final drive caliper mounting for loose or missing bolts. Replace any missing bolts. Retorque all bolts to 140 14 N m (100 10 lb ft).Suspension Springs
