Start By:a. remove center axle tires FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for Tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.1. Support center axle housing with Tooling (A).2. Engage parking brake.3. Chock the front and back of tractor tires and rear axle tires.
The driveshafts are under drive line windup pressure. You must release drive line windup pressure in all driveshafts before preforming any work on any driveshafts. To prevent possible injury or death, release the drive line windup pressure by raising all the wheels on one side of machine and then placing the wheels back on the ground. This will allow the drive line windup pressure to release.
4. Remove transfer gear to center axle drive shaft (1).5. Remove two bolts (2) from the front of center A-frame assembly (3). 6. Disconnect axle housing breather tube (4) and center axle brake line (5). 7. Remove two bolts (6) to release the panhard rod assembly (7) from the frame. 8. Place lift trucks on each end of the center axle. Secure center axle to the lift trucks. Raise center axle sufficiently to remove Tool (A).9. Place Tool (B) to the front of A-frame assembly.10. Remove four bolts (8) from both ends of center axle housing (9).11. Lower the center axle using the lift trucks and Tool (B), on Tool (C).12. Remove Tool (C) and the center axle housing from underneath the machine. The weight of the center axle housing is 1845 kg (4100 lb) for the D250E.
