Information:
FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for Tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Place blocks (1) to the front and rear of the tractor tires. 2. Place Tooling (A) under the frame of the machine.
The driveshafts are under drive line windup pressure. You must release drive line windup pressure in all driveshafts before preforming any work on any driveshafts. To prevent possible injury or death, release the drive line windup pressure by raising all the wheels on one side of machine and then placing the wheels back on the ground. This will allow the drive line windup pressure to release.
3. Disconnect drive shaft (2) at the rear axle housing (3). 4. Place Tool (B) under A-frame assembly (4).5. Remove two bolts (5) from A-frame assembly (4). The A-frame assembly weighs 158 kg (350 lb). 6. Disconnect rear axle breather line (6) and rear axle brake line (7). 7. Remove two bolts (8) that connect the panhard rod (9) to the rear axle. 8. Remove four bolts (10) from each side of the rear axle. 9. Use Tool (A) and the raise trailer chassis. Remove the blocks away from the tires and roll the rear axle housing (3), A-frame assembly and tires clear of the trailer chassis. The weight of the rear axle and the tires is approximately 3825 kg (8500 lb). Put the blocks back under the tires after the rear axle housing is rolled away from the chassis. Support the A-frame with a suitable jack stand.10. Lower Tool (A) until center axle tires are sitting on the floor. Remove Tool (A). For the installation of the rear axle housing, reverse the removal steps. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and the proper filling procedures.
