1. Was the Tank Just Drained
Yes or No
Result: If DEF tank was justdrained, then the code is reading the change in DEF Level. Clear the logged code and no more action is required.
Result: The DEF tank was not drained.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the DEF Lines
A. Visually check that the DEF lines are not clogged, leaking, or broken.
Damaged or Clogged
Result: DEF lines are damaged or clogged.
Repair:
- Replace and clean parts as needed.
- Clean the DEF Tank. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank – Flush".
- Check the DEF Quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality – Test".
Result: DEF lines are not damaged nor clogged.
Proceed to Test Step 3
3. Check the DEF Tank for Correct Fluid
A. The DEF level can show incorrectly if the DEF tank is not filled with the correct fluid. Check the DEF Quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality – Test".
DEF Quality Meets Standard
Result: DEF is contaminated.
Repair: Replace the DEF Tank Sensor assembly and flush the DEF Tank. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank – Flush".
Note: If diesel or oil is confirmed in the DEF, the following DEF components must be replaced: DEF Tank, DEF Heater Unit, DEF Pump, DEF Lines, and DEF Injector.
Result: The DEF is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Perform a Dosing Test
A. Test the DEF Injector. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Aftertreatment SCR System Dosing – Test".
Dosing Test
Result: DEF injector did not pass dosing test.
Repair: Replace DEF injector.
Result: DEF injector passed dosing test, repeat inspection of DEF system for a leak.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Unplug the DEF Pump Unit Connector and Measure the Resistance Between Pin A and pin H of the DEF Pump Unit Side Connector
DEF Pump
Result: Resistance measures approximately 3.4 Ω
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: Resistance does not measure approximately 3.4 Ω
Repair: Replace DEF pump with another DEF pump and recheck. If same results, replace DEF Pump.
2. Plug the DEF Pump Unit Connector and Unplug the DCU from Connector, Measure the Resistance Between DCU20 at the Wiring Harness Side and the Secondary Side of the Heater Relay
DCU
Result: Resistance measures approximately 3.4 Ω.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: Resistance does not measure approximately 3.4 Ω.
Repair: Replace DCU wiring harness.
3. Confirm Heater DEF Pump Heater Relay Has Not Shorted
Heater Relay
Result: The heater relay is not shorted.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The heater relay is shorted.
Repair: Replace the heater relay.
4. Unplug the DEF Pump Unit Connector and the DCU. Measure the Resistance Between Battery (-) and DCU20 at the Wiring Harness Side.
Note: This applies to 4355-4 only.
DCU
Result: Resistance is 1.0 kΩ or higher.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: Resistance is not 1.0 kΩ or higher.
Contact you Technical Communicator and submit a DSN ticket.
5. Unplug the DEF Pump Unit Connector and the DCU. Measure the Resistance Between Battery (+) and DCU20 at the Wiring Harness Side.
