Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Prime the fuel system in order to fill the fuel filter. Prime the fuel system in order to purge trapped air. The fuel system should be primed under the following conditions:
Running out of fuel
Storage
Replacement of the fuel filterThe machine is equipped with a hand operated fuel priming pump.

Open the engine access door on the left side of the machine. The fuel priming pump (2) is located above the primary fuel filter on the left side of the engine.
Turn the priming pump plunger counterclockwise and pull upward on the priming pump plunger.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system components.
Open vent valve (1) at the governor fuel transfer pump. Operate the priming pump (2) until the fuel comes out of the vent valve without air in order to fill the water separator element. Collect the fuel in a suitable container. Close the vent valve.
Open drain valve (4) that is located on the fuel filter base. Do not open drain valve (3) during priming. This will allow venting of air from the secondary fuel filters. Operate priming pump (2) until the fuel comes out of the hose of drain valve (4) without air in order to fill the filters. Close drain valve (4) .Note: After the secondary fuel filters are primed, additional priming is not needed in order to start the engine. However, if the engine runs out of fuel or the cylinder head has been drained, then continue to operate the fuel priming pump for an additional 15 strokes. This will fill the fuel lines and the fuel gallery in the cylinder before you start the engine.
Push the priming pump plunger downward. Turn the handle clockwise in order to lock the priming pump plunger in the close position.
Start the engine.If the engine will not start, further priming is necessary. If the engine misfires or if the engine emits smoke, further priming is necessary.If the engine is running rough, continue to operate the engine at low idle. Operate the engine until the engine runs smoothly.
Close the engine access door.
