Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the drive and steering axle from the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle (Front) - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the oil from the axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential Oil - Change".

Note: Put location marks on the axle housing, brake cylinder assemblies, and the center housing for assembly purposes.
Position wood blocks under the drive and steering axle in order to support the sections during removal. Attach a suitable lifting device onto the axle housing. The weight of the axle housing is approximately 170 kg (375 lb). Remove bolts (1) .

Remove axle housing (2) from brake cylinder assembly (3) .
Repeat Steps 2 through 3 for the other side.
