These instructions are for Caterpillar Vehicles originally equipped with Fire Resistant Fluid Hydraulic System Arrangements. This information either supplements, or replaces, corresponding information in the applicable Operator's or Lubrication & Maintenance Guides. These instructions and illustrations are specifically for vehicles originally equipped with Fire Resistant Fluid Hydraulic Systems; however, some information is adaptable to field converted vehicles. When the vehicle is operated in an area near material which is extremely hot, or in some underground operations, the use of petroleum oil in the hydraulic system can present a fire hazard. Under these conditions, the use of a fire resistant water-glycol fluid in the hydraulic system contributes greater safety to operation of the machine. The following information covers the special requirements of Fire Resistant Fluid Hydraulic Systems. All other information regarding care and operation, as given in the applicable Operator's or Lubrication & Maintenance Guides, applies equally to both types of hydraulic systems. See applicable Lubrication & Maintenance Guide of model to be serviced. Guide will show location of drain and level plugs, filters, and other components that require special attention. There are five general areas of the hydraulic system that require special parts, or procedures, for operation with water-glycol fluid. These are: 1. Hydraulic cylinders.2. Hydraulic pumps, lines and mounting groups.3. Hydraulic filters.4. Hydraulic brake slack adjusters (if equipped).5. Flushing the hydraulic system.
