All of the surfaces of rubber toric ring (3) must still be wet. Use installation tool (9) in order to position shaft seal ring (2) and toric ring (3) squarely on shaft (1), as shown. See Illustration 8. Apply even pressure with a slight motion of twisting in order to slide toric ring (3) and shaft seal ring (2) down shaft (1) until installation tool (9) contacts the end of shaft (1).

Check assembled height (A) all the way around the circumference. The difference in height around the ring must not be more than 0.8 mm (0.032 inch). Use gauge (13) in order to check the assembled height. This gauge is included in each Duo-Cone Seal Kit. See Special Instruction, SMHS8484.

Do not push on seal ring (2) directly in order to make small adjustments. If small adjustments are needed, use installation tool (9). Note: Toric ring (3) can twist during installation if the ring is not completely wet or if there are burrs on shaft (1).Note: Toric rings (3) must never slip on the ramps of either shaft seal ring (2) or shaft (1). Once the rings are in place, the rings must only rotate on the ramps.
Misalignment, twists, or bulges of the rubber toric ring will cause Duo-Cone Seal failures. If the correct installation is not obvious, remove the seal from the shaft and repeat Steps 4 through 7.

Put rubber O-Ring (12) on retainer seal ring (11). Make sure that rubber O-Ring (12) is not twisted.

Lubricate rubber O-Ring (12) for easier assembly into retainer (10). Note: Do not use too much lubricant. The lubricant must not get on shaft ramp (5) or rubber toric ring (3) during the assembly process. See Step 13.Use the same installation tool (9) that was used to assemble seal ring (2) and rubber toric ring (3) on shaft (1).Use this tool and a press. Insert seal ring (11) and rubber O-Ring (12) in retainer (10) until rubber O-Ring (12) is against the bottom of the bore in retainer (10).

Check assembled height (B) all the way around the circumference. The difference in height around the ring must not be more than 0.3 mm (0.012 inch).

Clean seal ring faces (8) of seal rings (2) and (11). No particles of any kind are permissible on the sealing surfaces.

Put a thin film of clean oil on the seal faces. Use an applicator in order to distribute the oil evenly. Be careful not to get any oil on the toric rings.

Select correct alignment sleeve (14). Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8484, "Tool and Spec Charts for Inverted and Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits" for the appropriate alignment sleeve.
Make sure that rubber O-Ring (15) is installed in retainer (10). Insert alignment sleeve (14) into the bores of retainer (10) and seal ring (11). Slip the entire assembly over shaft (1).
