Introduction
This is a service replacement governor group that is used as a replacement for the governor group on specific engines. Be sure you have the correct governor group for your engine before proceeding.Reference: Service Manual, Fuel Setting and Related Information Library (microfiche).Governor Installation
The engine may overspeed due to improper reassembly or adjustment, which could result in personal injury, loss of life, and/or property damage.Be prepared to stop the engine by activating the emergency air shut-off or closing the air inlets. On spark ignited engines, the fuel must also be shut off.
1. Shut off the fuel supply to the engine and disconnect the starting mechanism.2. Disconnect and remove the governor from the engine.
(Earlier Model Governor)
(Later Model Governor)3. Check the direction of governor oil pump (1) rotation on the original governor after it is removed. Check the direction of governor oil pump rotation on the service replacement governor.Governor oil pump rotation on the service replacement governor group MUST be in the same direction as the original governor that it is replacing. If it is necessary to change the direction of governor oil pump rotation for the service replacement governor, so it rotates in the same direction as the original governor, refer to the engine Service Manual for the necessary procedure. 4. Decal (2) on the outside of the governor housing indicates the direction of governor rotation. If the direction of rotation of the governor and the governor oil pump is changed, remove the decal.5. The service replacement governor comes without attachments. Any attachments that are on the original governor must be removed, and then installed on the service replacement governor.Refer to the Service Manual for parts removal and installation procedures. Always use new seals and/or gaskets to reduce the possibility of leakage.6. Install the service replacement governor on the engine, using new seals and gaskets as necessary. If the part number of the service replacement governor group is the same as the part number of the original governor group, no adjustments are necessary. If, however, the two part numbers are different, some adjustment will be necessary.7. Refer to the specific performance specification number (on the Engine Information Plate) to reference the Fuel Setting and Related Information Library (microfiche), for any pertinent information and/or specifications that are needed. (The Engine Information Plate is located on the engine cylinder block.)8. Refer to the Service Manual for the governor adjustment procedure. Make the adjustments according to the specifications given in the most current Fuel Setting and Related Information Library (microfiche) for the specific engine. If the necessary performance specification information is not yet in your copy of the fiche, contact the Service Engineering Product Analyst, Industrial Division, Caterpillar Inc. for the needed information.
