Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
The welds in the carbody frame may crack on certain Excavators. The cracks occur at the carbody leg to the center of the carbody on either side of the frame. The location of the cracks is shown in Illustration 1.Solution
If the welds in the carbody frame crack, remove the cracks. Create a bevel that is greater than 60 degrees and reweld the frame. Use the sequence that is shown in Illustration 2. Make sure that the weld penetration is sufficient. The improved sequence of welds is currently used in the manufacture of the carbody frames. The improved sequence of the welds is effective with 330D (S/N: EAH773-UP) Excavators.

Typical Carbody Frame (A) Locations of the cracked welds
Illustration 2 g01433592
Typical Welds In The Carbody FrameThe first weld in the sequence is the vertical up weld from point (C) to point (B). Make sure that the weld penetration is sufficient at point (C). Make sure that the weld bead only fills one half of the corner (C). If the weld bead in the corner is completely filled, the horizontal weld may not run smoothly. Also, the horizontal weld may not fuse completely with the starting point of the vertical weld.
Illustration 3 g01437198
Horizontal Fillet WeldThe second weld is a horizontal fillet weld from point (D) to point (E). The weld should be continuous without stopping at point (C). Refer to Illustration 3.
