Service Test Harness Detection circuitryThis diagnostic code is associated with the detection of the Service Test Harness. The Service Test Harness is used when the cab is removed from the machine. The Service Test Harness acts as a switch with respect to the ECM and the software then knows that the cab is removed and specific diagnostics are inhibited. This allows for the service tech to perform specified tests with the cab removed. The Service Test Harness is not a regular part of the machine harness. The Service Test Harness is a service tool harness specifically for performing tests with the cab removed. The ECM expects one of the two inputs to be grounded. When the ECM detects that neither of the switch inputs is grounded, the ECM will activate an FMI 03 diagnostic code for voltage above normal.Possible conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed:
One or both of the ECM input circuits are open in the machine harness.
The ground circuit is open in the machine harness.
One or more of the ECM inputs is shorted to a voltage source.
The machine harness has failed.
The Service Test Harness has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely. Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Test Step 1. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE.
Observe the status of the Diagnostic Code with the Service Test harness in the circuit.
Remove the Service Test harness and reconnect the original 40-pin machine harness connectors.
Observe the status of the Diagnostic Code.Expected Result:The Diagnostic Code is active only when the Service Test harness is in the circuit. Results:
YES - The Diagnostic Code FMI 03 is active only when the Service Test harness is in the circuit. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The Diagnostic Code FMI 03 is active when the Service Test harness is NOT used in the circuit. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 2. CHECK THE SERVICE TEST HARNESS FOR AN OPEN.
Both ends of the Service Test Harness are disconnected.
At the end of the Service Test Harness for connection to the ECM, connect a multi-meter test lead to contact 39. This end of the Service Test Harness would have pins and no wire connection at contact 40.
At the other end of the Service Test Harness connect the other multi-meter lead to contact 40. This end of the Service Test Harness would have sockets and no wire connection at contact 39.
Measure the resistance (continuity).Expected Result:The resistance measurement is less
