Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the installation procedure, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble.
Verify that all of the components are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.
Inspect all components for wear and replace the components, if necessary.

Prior to installation, lower the temperature of bearings (14) and (15) to a temperature of −45°C (−49.0°F).
Use Tooling (D) to install bearing (15) into the frame assembly.
Use Tooling (D) to install bearing (14) into the frame assembly.

Use Tooling (A) to position center arm (7) for installation into the frame assembly.

Illustration 16 g00522079Note: Align slot (X) on pin (13) with lock (11) prior to installation. It will be difficult to align after pin (13) is installed into center arm (5).
Align the bore of center arm (7) with the bore of the frame assembly. Insert pin (13) through the lower bore of the frame assembly. Insert pin (13) through the bore of center arm (7).
Measure the distance from the top of center arm (7) to the bottom of the frame assembly. Assemble shim pack (10) to obtain a gap of −.7 .6 mm (0.03 0.02 inch).
Position shim pack (10) so that pin (13) can be inserted into the top bore of the frame assembly.
Position pin (13) so that lock (9) can be installed.
Install two bolts (12) into center arm (7) and through lock (11). Tighten two bolts (12) to a torque of 370 50 N m (272.90 36.88 lb ft).
Remove Tooling (A) from center arm (7).

Connect two hose assemblies (8) and (9).

Attach Tooling (A) to steering link (1).

Apply Tooling (G) to the threads and the taper of ball stud (4).
Use Tooling (A) to lift steering link (1) so that ball stud (4) can be inserted into center arm (5).

Use Tooling (E) to install locknut (3) onto ball stud (4). Tighten locknut (3) to a torque of 2060 100 N m (1519.4 73.8 lb ft).

Install plug (6). Use Tooling (H) to install retaining ring (5). Install retaining ring (5) onto steering link (1).
Connect hose assembly (2) to steering link (1).
Repeat Steps 15 through 19 for the remaining steering link.
Check the alignment of the front wheels. Refer to Steering Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR1492, "Front Wheel - Align" for the correct procedure.
