Remove the steering cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Cylinder - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: If a holding fixture is not available for the steering cylinder to be disassembled vertically, Tooling (A) must be used in order to disassemble the steering cylinder horizontally.
Illustration 1 g00535058Note: Ensure that all hydraulic oil is drained from the steering cylinder before the steering cylinder is disassembled.
Position the steering cylinder onto Tooling (A), as shown.

Install support (arrow) under piston rod (1). Fasten the strap in order to hold piston rod (1) onto the support.
Remove four bolts (2) and the washers from head (3). Use Tooling (A) in order to remove piston rod (1) and head (2) from cylinder assembly (4).

Use Tooling (B) in order to remove locknut (6) from piston rod (1).
Remove piston (5) from piston rod (1).

Remove wear ring (7) from piston (5).
Remove seal assembly (8) from piston (5).

Install two 7/8 inch - 9 NC bolts through head (3) into cylinder assembly (4). Use Tooling (A) in order to remove piston rod (1) from head (3).
Remove two 7/8 inch - 9 NC bolts in order to remove head (3) from cylinder assembly (4).

Remove the following items from head (3): ring (12), O-ring seal (13), lip seal (9), U-cup seal (10) and seal assembly (11).
