Start By:
Remove the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR2534, "Torque Converter - Remove".

Loosen bolts (2) by approximately 25.0 mm (1.0 inch).

Remove two bolts (2) that are diametrically opposed. Replace the bolts with Tooling (C).

Use Tooling (A) (not shown) and a suitable lifting device to support the weight of flywheel (1). The weight of the flywheel is approximately 140 kg (309 lb).Note: Use Tooling (D) to turn the flywheel in the direction of the normal engine rotation. Before the flywheel is removed, install timing pins in the camshafts.
Remove the remainder of bolts (2). Slide flywheel (1) off the guide bolts to remove the flywheel.

If necessary, remove gear (3) from the flywheel assembly.

Install Tooling (C).
Illustration 7 g00538933Note: If ring gear (3) was removed, raise the temperature of the ring gear to a maximum temperature of 320 °C (608 °F). Install the ring gear on the flywheel so that the tooth chamfer is facing the engine.
If necessary, install gear (3) on the flywheel assembly.

Use Tooling (A) (not shown) and a suitable lifting device to support the weight of flywheel (1). The weight of the flywheel is approximately 140 kg (309 lb).Note: Align the mark on the flywheel with the mark on the crankshaft.Note: Check the flywheel runout. Refer to Specifications for further information.
Install flywheel (1) on Tooling (C).

Install bolts (2). Remove Tooling (C). Install two remaining bolts (2).Note: Use Tooling (B) (not shown) to tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 800 30 N m (590 22 lb ft). When the bolts are tightened, you may need to prevent the rotation of the engine.End By:
Install the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR2534, "Torque Converter - Install".
