Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
Remove plug (1). Drain the engine oil. The engine oil system has a capacity of approximately 291 L (77 US gal).
Remove plug (2). Drain the remaining engine oil from the rear oil pan.

Remove bolts (3). Loosen tube (4) from the oil filter assembly.

Loosen bolts (5). Remove bolt (6). Loosen tube (4) .

Remove bolts (7) from the front oil pan.

Support rear oil pan (9). Rear oil pan (9) weighs approximately 45 kg (99 lb). Remove bolts (8) from the engine.
Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.
Note: When the gasket is removed, make either a diagonal cut or a cut in the shape of a V in order to create a good seam. This is for installation purposes.
Remove rear oil pan (9) and the gasket from the engine.Installation Procedure
Note: Make a matching cut between the new gasket and the existing gasket in order to create a good seam. Use a suitable sealant in order to improve the effectiveness of the seam of the gasket.Note: Apply Tooling (A) to the contact point of the flywheel housing. Position a new gasket on the engine block. Apply Tooling (A) to each gasket joint.

Support rear oil pan (9). Rear oil pan (9) weighs approximately 45 kg (99 lb).
Install the gasket and rear oil pan (9) on the engine. Install 38 bolts (8) .

Install bolts (7) on the front oil pan.

Tighten tube (4). Install bolt (6). Tighten bolts (5) .

Tighten tube (4) to the oil filter assembly. Install bolts (3) .

Install plug (2) .
Install plug (1) .Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct refill capacities and for the correct filling procedure.
