Removal Of Main Bearing Caps
(1) Use a paper cup, as shown, on the tap. This way the chips will not fall into the crankcase. Turn the tap into tapping fixture (1), until you can see the first threads. (2) Remove both cap bolts from one side of the bearing cap only. Put the tip of the tap into the outside hole, and install tapping fixture (1) as shown. Cut threads approximately 25 mm (1") deep into the outside hole of the cap.(3) Remove the tap and tapping fixture (1). Be careful that no chips fall into the engine. Again, install the inside bolt on the bearing cap.(4) Do the same on the other side of the bearing cap. (5) Fasten an adapter (5) to each end of the bearing cap with 8S4754 Bolts. (6) Fasten a plate (4) to each side of the engine block with two S1594 Bolts. Fasten bar (2) to plates (4) with 7B3235 Bolts and Washers. Fasten bars (6) to adapters (5) and bars (2) with S1621 Bolts and washers. On front and rear main bearings, use spacers (3) between bars (6) and adapters (5) with 2B94 Bolts.(7) When this installation of tools is complete on both sides, remove the inside bearing cap bolts. (8) There must be one man on each side of the engine, and they must work together. In this way, they can now lower the bearing cap with bars (2), until the cap is at the end of slot (7).(9) Inspect the bearings.(10) To install the bearing cap again, two men must work together, one on each side of the engine. To pull the cap up into place, use the slotted bars (2) again. The cap must start into the block on both sides at the same time.(11) Install the inside bearing cap bolts.(12) Remove the tools. Install the outside cap bolts. Tighten all cap bolts to the correct torque. See specifications in the Service Manual.
