1. Fasten the seat belt. 2. Move the transmission selector lever (1) to NEUTRAL. Apply the parking brake (2). 3. Observe the body down indicator. The body should be down and the hoist control in FLOAT position. 4. Turn the disconnect switch on. 5. Depress the accelerator.6. Turn the engine start switch to START. Release the switch when the engine starts.Below 0°C (32°F)
Ether is poisonous and flammable.Breathing ether vapors or repeated contact of ether with skin can cause personal injury.Use ether only in well ventilated areas.Use ether with care to avoid fires.Do not smoke while changing ether cylinders.Do not store ether cylinders in the operator's compartment or living areas.Do not store ether cylinders in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 49°C (102°F).Discard ether cylinders properly. Do not puncture or burn ether cylinders.Keep ether cylinders out of the reach of unauthorized personnel.
1. Follow steps 1 through 5 for "Above 0°C (32°F)."2. Turn the engine start switch to START. 3. After cranking begins, push the ether starting aid control switch and hold for three seconds (time is required to fill chamber). Ether is injected when aid switch is released. Use additional starting fluid about every three seconds until the engine is running smoothly.
Do not use excessive starting fluid during starting or after the engine is running.Never turn the disconnect switch off while the engine is running. Serious damage to the electrical system may result.
For starting below -18°C (0°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to the "Cold Weather Operation Guide," Form SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting with an External Air Supply
Do not exceed 1035 kPa (150 psi).
Before charging the air start tank from an external air supply, drain the water from the external air supply system. 1. Remove the coupling cover. Connect the auxiliary air supply hose to fittings.2. After the engine starts, remove the supply hose and install the cover. Air start is standard for the 785 Truck. The batteries are used for lights, starter relay, etc.Charging Batteries
Always wear eye protection.Do not smoke or use any equipment which gives off sparks or heat in the area around the batteries. Hydrogen is given off by the batteries during the charging operation. Hydrogen, mixed with air can explode.Never let the ends of the two jumper cables make contact with each other.
Do not use welders for charging. Overvoltage can harm the electronic controls.
Always turn the machine disconnect, and accessory switches to the OFF position before connecting an external power source.Improper jumper cable connections can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury. When using jumper cables always connect positive (+) cable to positive (+) terminal of battery and negative (-) cable to negative (-) terminal.
