Transmission System
Change Oil, Filters, Wash Magnetic Screen, Filler Cap and Screen
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
The machine must be level, the parking brake applied and the engine stopped.To Drain Oil
1. Remove the filler cap to prevent a vacuum in the transmission tank. Install the cap after the tank is drained, to prevent dirt from entering the system.2. Remove the transmission tank drain plug. Open the drain valve by installing a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple. 88 mm (3.50 inches) long, in the bottom of the tank drain, to open the internal drain valve. Drain the oil.3. Remove the pipe nipple and install the drain plug. 4. Remove the drain plug from the transmission housing (1) and transmission extension housing (2) and drain the oil. Clean and install drain plugs.Transmission Return Filter
1. Remove the transmission return filter cover. 2. Remove and discard used filter elements (1).3. Remove screen (2).Install New Filter Elements
1. Clean the screen in nonflammable solvent. Install the screen in the tank.2. Install new elements in the tank.3. Install the cover.Wash Magnetic Screens (on new machines and after repair or when failure is suspected)
1. Remove the bolts from cover.2. Remove the wave washers.
Do not drop or rap magnets against hard objects.
3. Remove screen (1), the magnet and the tube assembly. Remove magnet (2) from tube assembly.4. Wash the magnet, screen and tube assembly in clean, nonflammable solvent. Clean the magnets with a clean cloth, stiff brush or pressure air.5. Install the clean magnet and tube assembly, screen and wave washer. Inspect the seal in the housing. Replace it if it is damaged. Install the covers. Change the transmission charge and lubrication filters. See topic "Transmission Charge and Lubrication Filters," in the "Every 500 Service Hours or 3 Months" section for procedures.Clean Filler Cap and Screen
1. Remove the transmission hydraulic tank filler cap.2. Remove the transmission filler screen retaining ring. 3. Remove the screen.4. Wash the cap and filler screen in clean, nonflammable solvent. Allow them to dry.5. Inspect the cap seal. Use a new seal if the used one is damaged.6. Install the filler screen and the retaining ring.Fill Transmission Tank
1. Overfill the transmission tank to bottom of fill tube. 2. Start the engine and run it at low idle.3. Check for leaks.4. Add oil to get the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge, with cold oil and engine idling.5. Install the filler cap.Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)
Torque the Mounting Bolts
There are 20 cab mounting bolts. The correct torque is 1904 68 N m (1400 50 lb ft).Make a visual inspection of the ROPS. If cracks are found in the welds or the structure, or if there are damaged or broken components, contact your Caterpillar dealer for any necessary repairs.Front and Rear Service Brakes
