- Starter Switch signal (ECM: V12 terminal) is not activated except within 2 sec after starter stopped
- CAN communication is normal between DCU and engine ECM
- CAN communication is normal between DCU and TANK sensor
- DTC:DEF Tank Temperature sensor error: Out-of-Range Low (SPN 3031, FMI 4) is not detected
- DTC: DEF Tank Temperature sensor error: Out-of-Range High (SPN 3031, FMI 3) is not detected DEF Tank temperature sensor data are out of range, or timeout for the data message occurred for 12 seconds or more

Follow the troubleshooting procedure to identify the root cause of the problem. The DEF Tank Sensor assembly has a temperature sensor within the assembly. The DEF temperature is communicated to the DCU by CAN communication.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the DCU. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Is 523616-2 No CAN Communication from Tank Sensor active or logged.
523616-2
Result: If the 523616-2 code is active or logged, troubleshoot that code first.
Result: If the 523616-2 code is not active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the DEF Quality
A. Check the DEF Quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality – Test".
DEF Quality Meets Standard
Result: If the DEF is contaminated.
Repair: Replace the DEF Tank Sensor assembly and flush the DEF Tank. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank – Flush".
Result: The DEF is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check for Codes
A. Turn Key Switch OFF and then ON.
B. Wait at least 47 seconds to confirm if code comes back.
Code Active
Result: Code is still active.
Repair: Then replace the DEF Tank Sensor assembly
Result: Code does not come back.
Return to service.
